The Hills Update
I never realized these little snippets existed until today, so if you ever miss The Hills one Monday night, check them out. They cut out the adverts, show almost as much of the show, and only take up 5 minutes of your time. Maybe I can persuade the wife to watch the shortened version from now on? Somehow I doubt it....

Top Gear Live
So one of the reasons I headed back to England a week before the wife was to make sure I could take part in a little birthday pressie for my two brothers - a day trip down to Birmingham to see Top Gear Live. Although we had to get up ridiculously early, it was well worth it, and everyone seemed to have a great time.
If you've never seen Top Gear on TV, you're missing out, even if you're not really that into cars (both Heidi and Lauren enjoy it despite their less than enthusiastic general disposition to auto transport). There's plenty of fun and games in each program to keep most people entertained, and every now and again, they put together a couple of live events (apparently tickets for the actual TV show mean an 20 year waiting list or something).
So, lots of cars going very fast in a small space, plenty of burning rubber, the usual dose of comedy and even a game of Smart Car Footy were put on to keep us entertained. The team was even conned (apparently a last day of the show stitch up by the producers) to play musical instruments while talking about the Supercars being shown.
And of course, Jeremy Clarkson, one of the funniest guys in the world, (and apparently being pushed to run for Prime Minster in the UK at the next election....)made his way into the crowd to dole out some abuse. I managed to avoid it by hiding behind my camera, and from what he said to the teenager 2 rows in front, I was a lucky boy 8-)
So, it was a blast, and if you ever get the chance to see one of these things, I'd recommend it. It's the only show you'll ever attend where the hosts end the show with "Just remember, although you've seen lots of fast cars driving about the stage today, when you leave here, you'll be back on public roads. So, in the interests of health and safety, drive fast" 8-))

Lauren on Dave
Especially for the wife, as we both failed to keep our eyes open late enough to see this on TV last night.

Letterman - A True Classic
I always loved Letterman - he runs the late night talk show of choice in our house (although I do occasionally get a craving for The Word on drunken Friday nights). But last nights episode was a bit of a classic (if you live under a rock, John McCain decided he needed to fly back to Washington and bail on Letterman at the last minute).

When is a TV too big?
Never, obviously ;-) But in trying to work out how this will fit into my living room, I realized it would probably involve a sledge hammer, followed my a little building, and the room next to the living room magically becoming smaller (or building a new extension out onto the deck).
Still, I can dream (which is a good job, coz reality is never going to get this big boy into my house, no matter how cheap plasma's ever become).

Natalie Portman Raps
Two reasons for this post (apart from to keep all those Star Wars geeks happy - it's kinda funny, especially as I've never seen her do stuff like this, and to see what happens with my new Hulu beta testing thing when I embed a clip from their site (although I'm a big Apple fan, this site so far has me all excited)

Writes Strike Takes Hold
So if you live outside the US, you can stop reading now. If you're in the US and you never watch TV, you can stop as well 8-)
So, the writers are on strike, but the only thing that's really changed so far has been re-runs of Letterman (aren't they all anyway) and Leno, and no new Daily Shows either. Survivable I think, but now that it's lasting longer, we're getting close to when the regular shows are going to start hitting the re-runs.
The kind folks at TV Guide have compiled a list of how many shows are left before they run out of new material. Apparently, there is only one Office episode left - luckily, although I always laugh out loud at this show, it conflicts with both CSI and Grey's, so I never see any of the originals anyway. I just hope they show the re-runs in order.

It's nice to know that at least the UK is pushing the boundaries for distribution over the web. Following on from it's earlier release of downloadable tv shows, today it announced that you can connect for free at any of The Cloud hotspots (7500 places, think T-Mobile if you're in the states) to watch your favorite tv. They also announced they'll stream tv, rather than just allow downloads, which gets them around the controversy of not supplying a Mac or Linux compatible version of their download software.
Of course, this is all still UK only - worldwide has probably still got 6 million legal agreements to get in place before it can happen....

So there's a report in The Times that everything isn't quite as it seems for Bear Grylls and his Man vs Wild adventures.
Reports of cushy hotel rooms and people helping him build stuff have appeared, and now Channel 4 are doing their own investigation.
To be honest, I'm not really sure I care - I saw him swim over an alligator infested river, jump down a waterfall, eat a live fish and then bite the head off a snake before eating the non-head end. If every now and again a couple of guys help him put some stuff together, or he needs a night in a hotel, so be it. And what a name (although I would have hated my parents if they had given me a name like that - anything out of the ordinary used to get you a decent kicking in Shields growing up, so Bear Grylls would have been a shocker - maybe that's how he ended up so tough.....)

Alledgedly, according to E! Online, via TV Squad. I'm not 100% convinced - I kinda got the impression they could start off with almost a whole new cast at the end of the last series, but maybe I'm just in a "everyone's going to die or leave" kinda mood with the end of The Sopranos almost upon us.

Oh, no - it could be the end of life as we know it. It looks like Tim Lovejoy isn't going to be participating in the Saturday morning institution known as Soccer AM (I try and watch it every time I go home - if only FSC would show it over here). At least Helen is staying on...

So, a pretty big couple of days for Lindsay - 2 appearances on Sopranos (brief, but weird seeing someone you know on a TV program you like - and I must say much better than the dodgy pepper cracking incident of Michael in CSI, which I can't find the link to right now). Anyway, the other news is that Wallstrip got bought by CBS. It seems like a popular thing, as lots of people are writing about it (but I'm too lazy to find all the links, so you'll have to make do with this one).

So it looks like Miles and Soledad are leaving American Morning (the CNN morning show) - not offical yet, but TV Week seem to suggest it's a done deal. This makes me kinda sad I guess - when I'm travelling on the east coast, I always watch them as I'm frantically trying to get ready on time. And they've definitely had their highlights - I think one of my faves was when Soledad supposedly was reviewing the Zune, and ended up giving a big shout out to her new Shuffle.
Hopefully the new team will be as cheerful and relaxed as these guys, and I don't end up gettign depressed before I even walk out the door in a morning.

My faith in human nature has been rattled today with the news that Blue Peter faked a contest winner to hide some issues they were having with the phone lines. If Blue Peter can't be trusted to stay honest, who can? I mean, did Shep steal dog biscuits on his days off? Peter Purvis was a secret drunk?

Apple TV Delivery Moved Up?
I'm pretty certain the last time I checked, my expected delivery date was the last week in March. But, being the optimistic sole that I am, I just went and checked again, and look what I found....

John Inman, one of the main characters on "Are you being served?" has died after a long illness. I was never sure if I liked this program or not - I was pretty young when it was on, but my Nana and Grandad used to watch it on a regular basis, so it was on whenever I was over there. It's also one of a few comedy shows from the UK that is broadcast on some random channels over here, but I've never really watched it since I was about 10 or so.

So the only reason I posted this was coz when I first came over here, the only channel I ever watched was the WB. It wasn't the only channel we got, but I think coz it had the baseball on there, and it was the only sport I tended to watch in the summer, I got lazy and used to the programs on the same channel.
So, Felicity used to be a big part of my life (how's that for a confession), although for the life of me I can't really remember much about it. Anyway, the star, Keri Russell got married this weekend (or maybe yesterday). She used to be my favorite girl on TV, but I've moved on now. Seems she has too....
Oh yeah, and Kenny Chesney isn't gay. Yeah, right, whatever.

Michelle Ryan, who played Zoe Slater in Eastenders has just been announced as the new Bionic Woman.
I think the Guardian put it best when they said "rape, incest, attempted suicide, prostitution, a fake pregnancy and even attempted murder, makes being rebuilt with bionic ear, legs and right arm sound positively pedestrian." I forgot how depressing Eastenders was/is since they stopped showing it on BBC America a couple of years ago. Never did understand that decision - it got me through many a hangover in my earlier years out here.
Anyway, a couple of more details over at TV Squad.

Apparently, anyway. If it doesn't, it's not my fault. At this point anything to supercede the crap that is allegedly called a user interface on my Comcast branded Motorola DVR, which decided to freeze for about 5 minutes, storing all of my frantic button presses to be ran through in the following 30 seconds, resulting in the end of Law and Order: SVU vanishing in a flurry of super fast forwarding motion and me running round the house swearing at the top of my voice. (Luckily the real Tivo downstairs did it's stuff, so we didn't miss it completely).
Oh year, Gizmodo reckons the Tivo interface might be free. Now that's the first time that will have happened in my years of Comcast experience....
Did I mention I love Tivo (unless you're trying to sign up for a 3 year plan for the father in law when he still has a year left on his one year gift subscription - apparently this throws the billing system into such confusion that the people on the other end of the line actually reject your offer of payment, and tell you to call back next week, when the subscription has ran out - now there's customer service for you).
LC Dumps Jason, Clarkson Hates Old People
Completely old news, but I just found out coz the new season of The Hills has started, and the wife is fixated on the TV, Lauren saw sense and dumped Jason. Turns out this broke back in August, but I wasn't paying attention in the slightest (ahh, I remember the days, temperatures were above freezing, and I had my summer tires on the car).
Speaking of cars, a gratuitous pic of the "old" Evo IX (X marks the spot later in the year, and everyone is eagerly awaiting the first reviews - please, please, please let it handle just as good as it's older relative), accompanied by a recent Jeremy Clarkson review. Apparently old people get in the way, and shouldn't be let out of the house - and I thought you grew out of these thoughts once you finished school/uni and realized you were one of those "old" people the young kids refer to. Guess not, but great review.

Christmas was good to me
As always, I managed to score big this Christmas, with lots and lots of amazing presents from everyone. One thing I need to get sorted out is setting up my SlingBox Pro - this amazing thing lets you watch what's on your TV at home when you're not there, using an internet connection to stream it onto your computer (or even cellphone, although I'm not too sure how long it will take Cingular to shut down my account if I try this - worth a go though, right ;-)). I just need to call into one of the 6 million electronics stores on the way home to get a wireless adaptor thingy to put up in the bedroom (the HD box is up there, so that's what I'm going to hook into).
I'll let you know how it works once I get it all sorted. And if anyone knows whether you can have a few people watching it simultaneously, let me know - I'm sure there'll be a few people wanting to watch the Newcastle games from the office!
